Tris–EDTAsignificantly enhances antibiotic efficacy against multidrug‐resistantPseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro

Abstract: Tris-EDTA significantly reduced the MBCs and MICs of marbofloxacin and gentamicin for multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa in vitro. This may be of use to clinicians managing these infections in dogs.

“…Proteus mirabilis clinical isolates also were four to eight times more susceptible to disodium EDTA than P. aeruginosa clinical isolates. In our study, the MIC range for Tris‐EDTA against canine otic Pseudomonas isolates was comparatively lower (1,500/470–3,000/930) than those reported previously, with the range of 2,200/600–8,900/2,400 μg/mL. The antimicrobial activity of disodium EDTA against both Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative ATCC strains in our study was quite close to the findings in a previous study …”

“…Infections with these organisms are typically treated with antimicrobial drugs, but there are increasing concerns about bacterial resistance and the requirement for diligent antimicrobial stewardship . Meticillin‐resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP), which is often multidrug‐resistant, as well as multidrug‐resistant P. aeruginosa strains are frequently isolated from canine OE and/or skin infections. Alarmingly, studies have shown that antimicrobial resistance in the human population, especially in pet owners and veterinarians, can be associated with organisms of canine origin .…”

“…This is because, EDTA can combine with the magnesium ions from the lipopolysaccharides (LPS) of the cell envelopes, resulting in LPS release and increased permeability of the cell membrane, facilitating infiltration of antibiotics into the cells [11]. Clinically, EDTA may also potentially change the response of bacteria in multiple-drug-resistant bacterial strains [28].…”

“…21 Although Tris-EDTA alone is known to be bacteriostatic, its addition to topical products significantly lowers the MIC and MBC values for several antimicrobials. 22 Antimicrobial peptides could represent a promising alternative to traditional antimicrobial drugs. A synergistic antimicrobial effect for AMP2041 with chlorhexidine has been hypothesized, due to their similar modes of action.…”
