Tuberculosis of the prostate and urethra: A review

Abstract: Genitourinary tuberculosis contributes to 10-14% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and is a major health problem in India. Prostate tuberculosis is uncommon and is usually found incidentally following transurethral resection. The most common mode of involvement is hematogenous, though descending infection and direct intracanalicular extension is known. Predisposing factors include prior tubercular infection, immuno-compromised status, previous BCG therapy. The presentation is diffuse caseating epitheloid cell gra… Show more

“…The hydrodynamic radius R h , determined by Eq. (2), is in good agreement with values determined by other authors (2.7 nm [11], 3.1 nm [26], 3 nm [27]). Furthermore, the results from the light scattering measurements (z-average diameter: 7.2 ± 0.2 nm, polydispersity index (PdI): 0.07) are consistent with the FCS measurements.…”

“…Indurated prostate at digital rectal examination and elevated PSA level are features common to both prostate carcinoma and mycobacterial granulomatous prostatitis. Prediposing risk factors that should raise the possibility of mycobacterial granulomatous prostatitis include history of tuberculosis infection, bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy, and immunosuppressive state (46,47). With treatment, the swelling of the prostate reduces and the caseous abscess cavity resolves (45).…”

“…It is probable that the stasis of urine infected by KB in the urethra has a major role in developing urethral TB [1]. The isolated urethral form of TB, as was the case with our patient, is rare [5,6]. …”
