Tuberculous laryngitis: A series of 37 patients

Abstract: A series of 27 cases of tuberculous laryngitis is reviewed to assess the diagnostic features of the disease. The condition generally presents in males of late middle age who have pulmonary tuberculosis, although the pulmonary disease is seldom advanced. The presenting symptom is usually hoarseness, and the laryngoscopic appearances frequently mimic a tumor or chronic non-specific laryngitis: few patients correspond to the classical descriptions of the disease found in old texts. Histological examination of bio… Show more

“…The predominance of men in the fifth or sixth decade of life, with no significant age difference between genders, observed in our study, has been frequently reported [ 16 , 20 , 21 ], although a lower age of female patients has been described [ 16 ]. Most of the patients had low socioeconomic conditions, such as low income and low education level which were factors described as facilitators for the development of the disease [ 15 , 22 , 23 ].…”

“…Due to the lack of standardization of the endoscopic findings, it is difficult to compare our results with those in the literature. In the 1980s, a classical description consisted in multiple lesions, frequently ulcerated [ 21 ]. Currently, ulcerated lesions are still observed [ 13 , 25 , 35 ], but some authors suggest that the lesions are hypertrophic or exophytic in most cases, and difficult to distinguish from chronic laryngitis of other etiologies [ 10 , 15 , 35 ].…”

“…In our study, hoarseness was found to be the most common symptom (90% of patients), as indicated in other reports [ 3 , 7 , 8 , 12 14 ]. The majority of our cases were single lesions (75%), localized in true vocal folds (60%), which in recent studies has been found to be a typical presentation of laryngeal tuberculosis [ 3 , 7 , 8 , 13 , 14 ]. The prevalence of involvement of the posterior larynx, so commonly reported in the past, is presently not observed.…”

“…Die Larynxtuberkulose stellt nach dem Lymphknotenbefall mit 1 % aller Tuberkulosefälle den zweithäufi gsten Manifestationsort im Kopf-Hals-Bereich dar [19]. Die anteriore Larynxhälfte ist dabei doppelt so häufi g betroff en wie die posteriore Hälfte [ 20 ] . Obwohl alle Larynxetagen involviert sein können, ist mit 50-70 % vor allem die Stimmlippenebene betroff en [ 21 ] .…”
