Tumour hypoxia imaging with 18F-fluoroazomycinarabinofuranoside PET/CT in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer

Abstract: F-FAZA PET/CT is feasible for visualization of hypoxia in patients with rectal cancer, but scattered activity from the urinary bladder should be taken into consideration.

“…In particular, 18 F-FAZA has been proposed, and its hypoxia-specific uptake mechanism has been demonstrated (5). The advantage of 18 F-FAZA over 18 F-FMISO seems related mainly to its kinetic properties (9), and it has been shown to be particularly promising for clinical purposes (10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…In addition, mapping of hypoxic tumor areas may enable specific targeting of hypoxic tumor tissue with intensified radiation therapy (7)(8)(9). 18 F-fluoroazomycinarabinoside ( 18 F-FAZA) is a promising hypoxia-specific PET tracer (10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15) that is based on a nitroimidazole group and that undergoes electron reduction when it enters cells. Under normoxic conditions, this process is followed by reoxygenation and transport from the cell.…”
