Tunable Optoelectronic Oscillator Based on a Polarization Modulator and a Chirped FBG

Abstract: A wideband-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on a tunable microwave photonic filter (MPF) consisting of a polarization modulator, a chirped fiber Bragg grating, and a polarization beam splitter (PBS). By simply adjusting the polarization state of the signal before the PBS, the center frequency of the MPF is tuned. The proposed OEO is experimentally demonstrated. A high-purity microwave signal with a tunable frequency within 5.8-11.8 GHz is generated. The … Show more

“…The first is a frequency doubling OEO that can generate either a 10 or 20 GHz RF signal from a single OEO cavity without the need for another laser [62]. Another demonstration shows a tunable OEO which can generate an RF signal from 5.8 to 11.8 GHz in 100 MHz steps [63].…”

“…However, the dispersion is difficult to realize a large tunable range in practice. In [9], a joint operation of a polarization modulator, a CFBG, and a polarization beam splitter (PBS) form a MPF. By incorporating the MPF into an OEO, a frequency-tuning range from 5.8 to 11.8 GHz was generated by tuning the polarization state of the polarization controller (PC) placed before the PBS, but the PC is susceptible to ambient condition, which have an effect on the system stability.…”
