Tunable THz frequency difference from a diode-pumped dual-wavelength Yb3+:KGd(WO4)2 laser with chirped volume Bragg gratings

Abstract: Abstract:We have demonstrated a simple and compact tunable dual-wavelength Yb 3+ :KGd(WO4)2 (Yb:KGW) laser. The laser is diode pumped through an optical bifurcated fiber and an adjustable beamsplitter. Thanks to two transversally chirped volume Bragg gratings (TCVBG) used as output couplers, the frequency difference between the two collinear waves is continuously tunable from 0 up to 7.8 THz with 110 GHz bandwidth. The frequency range is only limited by non optimized optical components and not by the principle… Show more

“…Moreover, for one given direction, two polarized modes can propagate, each with its own frequency. A two-frequency laser was realized with a Yb 3+ -doped KGd(WO 4 ) 2 crystal oriented in the N m -N g principal plane [11,12]. The beat note can modulate the photocurrent induced inside a photomixer associated with an antenna [13][14][15], constituting an indirect source of THz radiation.…”

“…The generation of high-spectral-purity continuous and tunable mm-wave or THz signal can be achieved by photomixing two optical frequencies that are provided by solidstate dual-frequency lasers (DFL) [12] [13] [14][15] [16]. Such lasers are attractive in terms of spectral purity because of their inherent low phase noise and common noise rejection.…”

“…This approach is based on intra cavity mode selection which is Volume Bragg Gratings (VBG) recorded in Photo Thermo Refractive (PTR) glass [20]. The use of RVBG as out put coupler for CW and pulsed solid state and semi conductor lasers has shown the unique characteristics, of which the narrowing and stabilization of laser spec tra occurs without output power loss [21][22][23][24][25][26]. In our experiment, a single SLM structure has been estab lished using RVBG instead of common mirror.…”
