Tungsten disulfide saturable absorbers for 67 fs mode-locked erbium-doped fiber lasers

Abstract: In this paper, we demonstrate 67 fs pulse emitting with tungsten disulfide (WS2) in mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) lasers. Using the pulsed laser deposition method, WS2 is deposited on the surface of the tapered fiber to form the evanescent field. The fiber-taper WS2 saturable absorber (SA) with the large modulation depth is fabricated to support the ultrashort pulse generation. The influences of the WS2 SA are analyzed through contrastive experiments on fiber … Show more

“…Driven by these efforts, mode‐locked fiber lasers based on other layered TMDCs and their derivatives including MoSe 2 , MoTe 2 , WTe 2 , WSe 2 , MoSe 2 , SnS 2 , ReS 2 , In 2 Se 3 , InS, TiS 2 , PtS 2 , PtSe 2 , and HfS 2 , have also developed rapidly, as shown in Table . It can be seen that for these lasers, the minimum pulse width is 67 fs, maximum output power is 212 mW, and maximum repetition rate is 8.82 GHz . Interestingly, the number of layers, oxidative and defective surfaces of layered TMDCs do not degrade their saturable absorption performance.…”

“…These efforts have greatly promoted the development of few‐layer MoS 2 in mode‐locked lasers and achieved a lot of important results . Similar to MoS 2 , layered WS 2 also has a direct bandgap and exhibits excellent nonlinear optical properties . For example, the researchers demonstrated the soliton mode‐locked fiber lasers using WS 2 nanosheets, which were prepared by the liquid phase exfoliation and pulsed laser deposition method, respectively, as shown in Figure a–f.…”

“…Overall, the shortest pulse duration based on TMDs was achieved by Liu and his collaborators. They used a hybrid mode‐locking of nonlinear polarization evolution and a WS 2 SA to obtain a pulse duration as low as 67 fs in Figure 249. Meanwhile, the 3 dB spectral width of up to 114 nm was also realized in the same work.…”
