Turkish Neonatal and Turkish Ophthalmology Societies consensus guideline on the retinopathy of prematurity

Abstract: Retinopathy of prematurity is a pathophysiological condition that occurs in relation to abnormal proliferation in the retinal vessels in premature babies. Its exact pathogenesis is not known. In Turkey, the increased chance of survival in premature babies with much younger gestational age and much lower birth weight in parallel with the developments in neonatal care causes retinopathy of prematurity, which has led to vision problems and blindness to emerge as a more frequent problem. “…In 13 countries at least one additional risk factor/sickness criteria for screening was clearly defined. 25,26,29,31,33,35,37,40,41,[43][44][45][46] In these 13 guidelines and in four further documents, a paediatrician or neonatologist could initiate screening if they considered a newborn to be at risk of ROP if they fell outside the GA and BW criteria. 30,32,36,39 In five countries, 27,28,34,38,42 all indications for screening were clearly defined.…”

“…In the Turkey Retinopathy of Prematurity Guideline prepared by the Turkish Neonatal Society and Turkish Ophthalmology Society in 2016, screening was recommended in all babies with a gestational age of ≤32 weeks or a birth weight of ≤1500 g and in babies with a gestational age of >32 weeks or a birth weight of >1500 g who have undergone cardiovascular supportive treatment or in preterm babies who are considered risky in terms of development of ROP by a physician monitoring the baby (40). The first ophthalmologic examination should be performed at the postmenstrual 31 st week in babies born with a gestational age below 27 weeks and in the postnatal 4 th week in babies born with a gestational age of ≥27 weeks (2).…”

“…In addition, the frequency of strabismus, amblyopia and refractive disorder is increased in children who were born prematurely independent of development of retinopathy. Therefore, it is recommended that preterm babies should undergo full ophthalmologic evaluations at the age of 9-12 months, 2-3 years, and before school age (38, 40).…”
