Twelve‐month self‐reported quality of life after retropubic radical prostatectomy: a prospective study with Rand 36‐Item Health Survey (Short Form‐36)

Abstract: OBJECTIVES To evaluate the health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients undergoing retropubic radical prostatectomy (RRP) for clinically localized prostate cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS From February 2002 to September 2003 all patients undergoing RRP in our department were invited to participate in the study; the data from 75 of them comprised the present analysis. For evaluating HRQoL the RAND 36‐Item Health Survey (SF‐36) was used. RESULTS Comparing the baseline scores of the SF‐36 domains to those at 3… Show more

“…HRQOL was reassessed at regular intervals using well-validated, self-reported questionnaires every 6 to 12 mo. We used the Medical Outcomes Studies Short Form-36 (SF-36) to provide measures of physical function and mental health [8], and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Prostate Cancer Index (PCI) to provide measures of sexual, urinary, and bowel function and bother [9,10]. Both instruments yield scores from 0 to 100, with higher scores denoting better function or less bother.…”

“…Old-old men may already be experiencing stress related to aging and other co-existing health conditions so that the diagnosis of prostate cancer and its treatment is seen as one more stress to manage which in turn negatively affects their appraisal of illness. Ficarra and colleagues found that older men had more emotional limitations following prostate cancer treatment, difficulty with role performance and lower energy/fatigue status [68].…”

“…In other words, patients in the young-old group (65)(66)(67)(68)(69)(70)(71)(72)(73)(74) found the diagnosis of prostate cancer less threatening than either the middle age or old-old groups of men. These findings were consistent with those of other researches who have found that younger age was associated with more stressful appraisal of the cancer experience [38].…”
