Twenty‐one years of microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (1991–2012): A powerful analytical tool

Abstract: Microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) is a CE separation technique, which utilizes buffered microemulsions as the separation media. In the past two decades, MEEKC has blossomed into a powerful separation technique for the analysis of a wide range of compounds. Pseudostationary phase composition is so critical to successful resolution in EKC, and several variables could be optimized including surfactant/co-surfactant/oil type and concentration, buffer content, and pH value. Additionally, MEEKC cou… Show more

“…The classic shake‐flask method has several limitations: it is time consuming and requires large amount of pure and stable compounds. These drawbacks can be successfully avoided while using some indirect methods for determination of n ‐octanol‐water partition coefficient, such as reversed‐phase thin‐layer chromatography (RP‐TLC), reversed‐phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP‐HPLC) , or electrokinetic chromatography (EKC) . EKC is a branch of capillary electrophoresis (CE), based on chromatographic principles, that uses the solutions containing an ionic pseudostationary phase.…”

“…Especially, MEEKC proved to be an efficient mode for the analysis of impurities because of the high separation efficiency as well as the fact that charged and uncharged compounds can be analyzed simultaneously. The basics of MEEKC can be found in recent reviews, for example, in . An example of MEEKC in drug purity analysis is the analysis of eight related substances in the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor ramipril including uncharged diketopiperazin derivatives .…”

“…In addition, the solubility of steroid type and neutral compounds of hydrophobic analytes is poor. MEKC and MEEKC are excellent methods for analyses of hydrophobic and neutral compounds when the addition of micelle‐forming surfactants is used in the BGE solutions. Micelles are needed for dissolving purposes and separation of non‐ionizable compounds.…”
