Twin peaks: The Omicron SARS-CoV-2 BA.1 and BA.2 epidemics in England

Abstract: Rapid transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant has led to record-breaking incidence rates around the world. The REal-time Assessment of Community Transmission-1 (REACT-1) study has tracked SARS-CoV-2 infection in England using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) results from self-administered throat and nose swabs from randomly selected participants aged 5+ years, approximately monthly from May 2020 to March 2022. Weighted prevalence in M… Show more

“…Rounds 11,12 and 16 are excluded from analysis because they occurred at times when two variants were competing for dominance in the population. 14 Adults aged 18 years and over were included in the analysis. A total of 266,847 participants were excluded because of missing symptom data, and 38 were excluded because of missing age or sex data resulting in a final study population, after exclusions, of 1,542,510 participants.…”

“…Omicron infection rates have been high in all age groups and have been particularly notable in children [4]. Indeed, in one study SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in this age group rose from 40% to 82% following emergence of the Omicron variant [5].…”

“…However, active circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants still leads to substantial numbers of reinfections 32 , impacting human health. Booster vaccinations with current vaccines have helped to alleviate COVID-19 disease but will not provide long term immunity to keep the prevalence of emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 at low levels 33 . The next generation of COVID-19 vaccines should focus on preventing infection and/or reducing transmission.…”
