“…As far as RA-related diseases are concerned, Morito et al [56] recently claimed that three ma-jor protein spot differences occurred between the 2D polypeptide patterns of serum proteins of patients suffering from lupus erythematosus and their relatives, on the one hand, and a control group, on the other. Trapani et al [52] reported no alterations in proteins or occurrence of neoantigens in the 2D electrophoretograms of lymphocytes of patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis (as compared to a healthy group).…”

“…Twodimensional (2-D) gel analysis has revealed two distinct electrophoretic patterns of B27 molecules that correlate with B27M2-and CTL-defined variants (Kaneoka et al 1983). The limited number of B27-positive donors examined probably explains why these researchers failed to detect all, and some researchers failed to detect any (Trapani et al 1984), of the aforementioned MAb-and CTL-defined variants with this technique. A more extensive analysis of a cell panel donated from 68 unrelated B27-positive individuals of diverse ethnic origin, was performed with isoelectric focusing (IEF) gel techniques (Choo et al 1986).…”

“…Some IEF variants were only detected in donors of a certain racial origin, suggesting again that unique genetic variations may occur in these groups. No correspondence was detected, however, between either 2-D gel or IEF HLA-B27 variants and disease susceptibility (Trapani et al 1984;Choo et al 1986).…”

“…However, such a polymorphism has not been detected in two studies using two-dimensional PAGE and tryptic and chymotryptic peptide mapping. 19 20 In fact no difference in structure of B27 was noted between subjects with AS and normal subjects. The polymorphism in B27 structure defined by B27m2 (12% of individuals typed as B27+ by conventional means lack the determinant detected by this monoclonal antibody) does not correlate with susceptibility to AS.'…”
