Two New 3,4;9,10-seco-Cycloartane Type Triterpenoids fromIllicium difengpiand Their Anti-Inflammatory Activities

Abstract: A pair of new 3,4;9,10-seco-cycloartane type triterpenoid stereoisomerides: 24R,25-dihydroxy-3,4;9,10-seco-4(28)-cycloarten-10,3-olide (1) named Illiciumolide A and 24S,25-dihydroxy-3,4;9,10-seco-4(28)-cycloarten-10,3-olide (2) named Illiciumolide B were isolated from the stem bark of Illicium difengpi, as well as five known biogenetically related triterpenoids, including sootepin E (3), betulinic acid (4), lupeol (5), (all-Z)-1,5,9,13,17,21-hexamethyl-1,5,9,13,17,21-cyclotertracosahexaene (6), and (all-E)-2,6… Show more

“…Previous studies on I. difengpi have mostly addressed the extraction and pharmacological activity of the chemical components of its bark. Dozens of chemical components, such as phenylpropanoids [8], aromatic glycosides [9], triterpenes [10], sesquiterpenes [11] and volatile oils [12], have been isolated from I. difengpi thus far. However, I. difengpi is an endangered species.…”

“…Recent studies have demonstrated that squalene has anti-inflammatory activity both in vivo and in vitro, by inhibiting the nuclear factor kappa B and the production of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1b and TNF-a). It also downregulated cyclooxygenase 2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (Li et al 2013;Sanchez-Fidalgo et al 2015).…”

“…Other phytoconstituents in JT extracts, such as squalene from Cynodon dactylon, phytol from Erythrina variegate and Azadirachta indica , and stigmasterol derived from Pongamia pinata may also contribute to the biological effects of the JT extracts. Studies have demonstrated that squalene promotes remodelling and tissue repair response signals by inhibiting the nuclear factor-kappa B, inducible nitric oxide synthase, the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1 β and TNF- α , and stimulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 and IL-4 [ 46 , 47 ]. The biological activities of phytol and phytosterols can be attributed to anti-inflammatory activities through reduction of leukocyte and neutrophil migration, IL-1 β , IL-6, and TNF- α levels and oxidative stress, as well as antibacterial effects [ 48 50 ].…”
