Two New Species of Laccaria (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) from Korea

Abstract: Species of Laccaria (Hydnangiaceae, Agaricales, and Basidiomycota) are well-known ectomycorrhizal symbionts of a broad range of hosts. Laccaria species are characterized by brown, orange, or purple colored basidiocarps, and globose or oblong, echinulate and multinucleate basidiospores. While some Laccaria species are easily identified at the species level using only the morphological characteristics, others are hard to distinguish at the species level due to small differences in morphology. Heretofore, ten Lac… Show more

“…Our results indicate that despite the distance between East Asia, the mountainous areas of Vietnam, and central Siberia, their Hydnum species share similar ecological traits. These findings support those of previous studies highlighting the differences between Asian ectomycorrhizal fungi and those in western regions, which are attributed to variations in continents and ecological environments [ 42–44 ]. Therefore, continued research on the fungal taxonomy in the eastern region provides an opportunity to further explore the diversity of fungi, which has only been partially revealed thus far [ 45 ].…”

“…Classically, information on the diversity and distribution of ECM fungi is based on a survey of fungal fruiting bodies [ 16 , 17 ]. We have previously confirmed 13 Laccaria species based on specimens collected from fruiting bodies [ 12 , 13 ]. However, this approach may only partially reflect fungal diversity because many species do not produce conspicuous fruiting bodies [ 18–22 ].…”
