Two new species of the genus Meleonoma Meyrick from China (Lepidoptera, Gelechioidea, Xyloryctidae)

Abstract: Two new species of Meleonoma Meyrick, 1914a (Gelechioidea, Xyloryctidae) from southeastern China are described: Meleonoma foliiformis Yin, sp. nov. from Guangxi Province and M. projecta Yin, sp. nov. from Fujian Province. Adults and male genitalia are described in detail. A list of the Meleonoma species occurring in China is given. The taxonomic position of Meleonoma has been unstable, and under debate. Nonetheless, it is here tentatively placed in the family Xyloryctidae, following the latest molecular phylog… Show more

“…This paper is a continuation of our taxonomic studies of the Chinese Meleonoma Meyrick, 1914. The last contribution of ours to this subject was a description of two new species from China with a review of its taxonomic history (Yin and Cai 2019), and yet, the examination of newly received specimens collected from Yunnan Province brought another three new species, Meleonoma plicata sp. nov., M. scalprata sp.…”

“…Adding the three Japanese species recently published by Kitajima and Sakamaki (2019), the total number of Meleonoma species has thus increased to 43, with 19 occurring in China. A checklist of the Chinese Meleonoma prior to this study can be found in Yin and Cai (2019).…”

“…described the genus Meleonoma and classified it in the family Oecophoridae. It was subsequently placed in Cosmopterigidae (Clarke 1965;Nye and Fletcher 1991;Li andWang 2002, 2004), Lypusidae (Lvovsky 2015;Park and Park 2016), and back to Oecophoridae (Yin and Wang 2016a;Kitajima and Sakamaki 2019). In recent study, Meleonoma is hypothesized to be part of the subfamily Periacminae (Autostichidae) based on both molecular data and morphological study (Wang and Li 2020).…”
