Two new standard reference materials for the determination of drugs of abuse in human hair

Abstract: Two new standard reference materials (SRM) for drugs of abuse in human hair have been developed. SRM 2379 consists of hair spiked with cocaine, benzoylecgonine, cocaethylene, phencyclidine, amphetamine, and methamphetamine. SRM 2380 consists of hair spiked with codeine, morphine, monoacetylmorphine, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The SRMs were prepared by soaking the hair in a solution of the target analytes in water-dimethylsulfoxide. The concentration of each analyte was determined using two methods, one ba… Show more

“…Hair samples were fortified by soaking using a previously reported procedure [38]. Briefly, hair were cut and immersed in a flask containing a solution consisting of 1.5 mL of HCl (0.02 M in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) and 1.5 mL of water containing the analytes.…”

“…The hair RM was prepared using drug-free hair as previously described [10]. About 10 g of drug-free hair was shampooed and washed with a sufficient volume of water, methanol and dichloromethane twice for each and used for the preparation of the RM after air-dried and cut into about 5 cm.…”

“…[3,4]. Moreover, as the number of cases requiring hair testing has been increased, its related issues -development of sensitive analytical methods, interpretation of results, quality control, characteristics of hair itself, for example -have been discussed in detail [1,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…The former consists of hair spiked with cocaine, benzoylecgonine, cocaethylene, phencyclidine, amphetamine (AP) and methamphetamine (MA). The latter consists of hair spiked with codeine, morphine, monoacetylmorphine and tetrahydrocannabinol (Welch et al, 2003). Nevertheless, the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) recommended that authentic standard hair specimens be used in a proficiency testing program for external quality control (SoHT, Accessed 5 Oct 2010) because the condition of drug incorporation of the spiked hair is different from that in real cases.…”
