Two outbreaks of herpes simplex virus type 1 nosocomial infection among newborns

Abstract: Two outbreaks of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection occurred in three newborns at each of two hospitals, and two of the infants in each case died of disseminated HSV-1 infection. Restriction endonuclease profiles of HSV-1 DNAs isolated from the three in each instance were essentially identical, indicating that they were epidemiologically related. In the first instance, each of three infants born in the same hospital at intervals of approximately 2 years or 1 year was infected with HSV-1. In this cas… Show more

“…Понимание деталей различных путей передачи вируса и генетических особенностей, лежащих в её основе, определяет направление клинического лечения и разработки стратегии здравоохранения. По традиции доказательство передачи ВПГ базируется на данных метода полиморфизма длины рестрикционных фрагментов (RFLP) или выборочного секвенирования по Сэнгеру [37]. Однако эти методы недостаточно чувствительные, так как не выявляют однонуклеотидные полиморфизмы (SNP) и малые инсерции/делеции.…”

“…The rare sites were not used as markers for the classification of HSV-2 isolates into genotypes. However, these rare sites can be useful as the characteristic sites of individual strains for molecular epidemiological analysis in HSV-2 as well as HSV-1 infections [Sakaoka et al, 1986;unpublished data]. As expected, the rate sites were most frequently found in BarnHI (GGATCC) and KpnI (GGTACC) digestion, as they have more cleavage sites for the HSV-2 genome (Fig.…”

“…Most neonates with herpes simplex virus (HSV) acquire the infection from their mother, although nursery transmission of HSV infection has been described [161][162][163]. Although the precise mechanism of transmission remains unclear in some cases, contact transmission has been commonly implicated.…”

“…Although the precise mechanism of transmission remains unclear in some cases, contact transmission has been commonly implicated. Presumed patient-to-patient transmission apparently via the hands of health care workers has been described [163]. Additionally, HSV can frequently be recovered from the hands of parents and health care worker with herpes labialis [164].…”
