“…Pre-registration can help researchers, as individuals and teams, to carry out specific types of research endeavor in which it is useful to agree on procedures ahead of time. One such type is adversarial collaboration between PRE-REGISTRATION IN SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY 13 scholars with opposing views, sometimes proposed in psychology and related fields (e.g., Kahneman, 2003;Nier & Campbell, 2013;Rakow, Thompson, Ball, & Markovits, 2014), although published empirical examples are as yet few (e.g., Bateman, Kahneman, Munro, Starmer & Sugden, 2005;Matzke et al, 2015;Mellers, Hertwig & Kahneman, 2001).…”

“…In adversarial collaboration, there is a good faith effort to conduct joint research (or coauthor a joint publication), which may not only uncover new data, or reduce differences of opinion, but may also lead to greater mutual respect between the antagonists (Mellers, Hertwig, & Kahneman, 2001). For example, adversarial collaboration was profitably explored between feminism and evolutionary psychology in a special issue of the journal Sex Roles (Nier & Campbell, 2013). The Chomsky-Skinner language controversy may be a particularly fruitful area for adversarial collaboration, and the present paper highlights that adversarial collaboration may also benefit from historical and biographical considerations.…”

“…But resolving such disagreements could greatly benefit the field by helping stakeholders come together with a more unified data-based agreement. In psychology, several teams have developed protocols and checklists that help PACs succeed (Kerr et al, 2018; Latham et al, 1988; Matzke et al, 2015; Mellers et al, 2001; Neir & Campbell, 2013). Cowan et al (in press) have even established an extended adversarial collaboration spanning many studies.…”
