Tylosin Phosphate (TP) and Tylosin Urea adduct (TUA) for the Prevention of Liver Abscesses, Improved Weight Gains and Feed Efficiency in Feedlot Cattle

Abstract: Four feedlot experiments with 774 cattle have been completed during 1969 to 1970 evaluating two forms of tylosin activity (50, 75 and 100 mg per head per day continuously of tylosin phosphate or tylosin urea adduct) in high concentrate rations. Continuous administration of these three levels of antibiotic activity from either form of tylosin (1) reduced the incidence of liver abscesses, (2) increased average daily gain, and (3) improved feed conversion of feedlot cattle. Mathematically combining data from all … Show more

“…Monensin has frequently been reported to reduce feed intake (Davis and Erhart, 1976;Boling et al, 1977). The lack of effect of tylosin on feed intake agrees with the data reported by Brown et al (1973Brown et al ( , 1975 and Heinemann et al (1978). Feed efficiency data are shown in table 7.…”

“…The cattle fed tylosin gained gaster (P<.05) than the cattle not fed tylosin (1.97%). These results differ from those reported by Heinemann et al (1978) and Pendlum et al (1978), but agree with those reported by Brown et al (1973Brown et al ( , 1975. The interaction of tylosin and monensin was nonsignificant.…”

“…It is important to emphasize the good activity of the tylosin, which is used as additive in animal feed for the prophylaxis of hepatic abcessation. These results`in vitro' correspond to those obtained in animals by various authors (Brown et al, 1973;Brown et al, 1975;Galyean et al, 1992;Clary et al, 1993;Tan et al, 1994) in which a significant decrease of hepatic abscesses incidence was observed when tylosin was incorporated together with the feed. This diminution of the incidence of hepatic abscesses is also observed when virginiamycin is supplied in the feed (Skrivanova & Marounek, 1993).…”

“…De acordo com a literatura, a principal causa dos abscessos hepáticos encontrados em bovinos abatidos nos matadouros e frigoríficos é proveniente de quadros prévios de ruminites, desencadeados inicialmente por distúrbios digestivos, em especial, pela acidose ruminal 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 .…”
