Typical defects in plate and long steel products

Abstract: Purpose -During steel plate and long-product production, numerous imperfections and defects appear that deteriorate product quality and consequently reduce revenue. The purpose of this paper is to provide a practical overview of typical defects (surface and internal) that occur and their root causes. Design/methodology/approach -The data presented here derive from the quality department and from more than 50 technical reports of ELKEME S.A. on the last decade's production of steel making companies STOMANA S.A.… Show more

“…A defect in structure is indispensable as it could occur at the manufacturing stage or during service life through dynamic loading, ageing, environmental effects, and corrosion activities [38,39]. All these factors affect the strength of structure through variation in its flexural rigidity or mass that manifests in vibrational frequency [18,[40][41][42][43] of the structure as in Equation (1).…”

“…During rolled steel production, hard processes such as cold rolling, etching, annealing and deposition may introduce defects to the steel surface [1][2][3]. Six common types of defects are rolled-in scale (RS), patches (Pa), crazing (Cr), pitted surface (PS), inclusion (In) and scratches (Sc) as shown in figure 1 [4][5][6][7].…”
