Tyzzer described an enterohepatic syndrome in Japanese waltzing mice with a fatal outcome. 1 Subsequently, the disease was described in a wide range of domestic animals such as rodents, 1 lagomorphs, 2 primates, 3 cattle, 4,5 dogs, 6,7 cats, 8,9 birds, 10,11 and horses, as well as in humans. 35 The causative agent originally was named Bacillus piliformis, but it recently was reclassified taxonomically into the clostridial genus.…”

“…It is believed that factors such as these may either predispose animals to a primary infection or allow the reactivation of a latent infection (Karstad and others 1971, Chalmers and MacNeill 1977). Tyzzer's disease has been reported in domestic dogs and in raccoons immunocompromised by canine distemper (Poonacha and Smith 1976, Iwanaka and others 1993, Wojcinski and Barker 1986, Anon 1996), and in kittens infected with feline panleucopenia virus (Ikegami and others 1999a). The single reported case of Tyzzer's disease in a human being was associated with hiv infection (Smith and others 1996).…”
