SUMM.4RY:The solution behaviour of poly(eth> lene glycols) with molecular weights between 62 (ethylene glycol) and 38000 was studied in seven solvents by vapohr pressure osmometry and light scattering and, in part, Ly ultracentrifugal methods at 25°C. Increasing association was found in the series acetonitrile, dioxane, benzene and carbontetrachloride and no association in water, methanol and dimethylformamide. The 2nd virial coefficients of the associated particles are zero in carbontetrachloride independent of the molecular weight. They are positive in acetonitrile and decrease with increasing molecular weight in this solvent, as well as in water, methanol and dimethylformamide. The molecular weight dependence of the 2nd virial coefficients in w'ater and in acetonitrile can be described in function of the type A, = f(M-025) in the range of molecular weights from 106 to 38000. The values in methanol are showing an inflection point in this diagram. This observation in connection with the very high virial coefficients of the low molecular weight poly(ethy1-ene glycols) can be explained by the model of a partial helix in this solvent.
