The decay rate of the 2s2 2p2
1S0 level in N II has been measured optically (λ = 575 nm) at a heavy-ion storage ring. The result of (1.10 ± 0.27) s-1 agrees with the theoretical predictions. The new data complement an earlier study of the same level decay in O III and F IV. Over this short range of ions, the role of the E2 and M1 decay modes changes dramatically.
