Ultradian and Infradian Rhythms in the Dynamic of Testosterone Concentration in the Serum of the White-Breasted Hedgehog Erinaceus roumanicus

Abstract: the aim of the study was to identify ultradian (intraday) and infradian (multi-day) rhythms in the dynamics of testosterone concentration in the blood serum of white-breasted hedgehogs. Blood sampling was performed from the femoral veins of 12 male hedgehogs. We found ultradian rhythms of testosterone on both sampling dates-March 7-8 (a day length of 11 hours and 15 minutes) and May 10-11 (a day length of 16 hours). An 8-hour rhythm of testosterone concentration has been established. the acrophases were at the… Show more

“…While the circadian rhythm is the most studied cycle, there are also cycles in nature that are shorter, ultradian (<22 h), and longer, infradian (>26 h) that also play a role in the regulation of biological systems [ 58 ]. The underlying mechanisms for infradian rhythms are poorly understood even if examples of these, which include levels in sex hormones [ 59 , 60 ], melatonin [ 61 ], and dopamine [ 62 ] have been shown. A major issue in the study of such cycles is the enormous amount of interaction between all the different rhythms with all their various periods.…”

“…Life on earth is regulated by biological rhythms. Some are daily rhythms linked to the light-related circadian cycle 19 , 20 . Others are longer than 24-h with an infradian cycle.…”

“…Others are longer than 24-h with an infradian cycle. Evidence of the infradian cycle is present in a range of organisms (such as tree rings) and mammalian physiological systems [20][21][22][23] . For humans, a near 7-day rhythm has been identified in adult heart rate, core body temperature, excretion of metabolites and salt and blood pressure during pregnancy [24][25][26][27][28][29] .…”

“…Infradian about 4-day fluctuations were found in many biological parameters: concentrations of melatonin, glucocorticoid and sex hormones 1 – 6 , motor activity 7 , immune system 8 , 9 , mitotic activity of cells 10 , 11 . Based on the facts that (1) 4-day rhythms are preserved during the removal both of the testes and adrenal glands 12 , and (2) hibernating hedgehogs with reduced hormonal activity had the stable rhythms of spontaneous short-term arousals 13 , it can be argued that the formation of this infradian rhythm is not associated with hormonal regulation.…”
