Ultrasonic linear motor using the L-B mode Langevin transducer with an exponential horn

Abstract: An ultrasonic linear motor is proposed and fabricated by using the longitudinal and bending vibration double mode bolt-clamped Langevin type transducer to meet high power and speed requirements in the aerospace and semiconductor industries. The elliptical trajectory of the driving tip is formed by exciting the longitudinal and bending vibration with phase difference, which generates thrust force and normal force, respectively. An exponential shape horn is adopted to achieve a high linear speed. The classical t… Show more

“…These motors transmit power via frictional force at the contact area between the stator and rotor, which originates from the traveling wave generated along the circumferential direction of the stator [8]. Advantageous features such as high stalling torque [9,10], fast response [11], magnetic resonance compatibility [12,13], and high precision motion without magnetization are the motor's strengths because microscopic stepping motion can be achieved by controlling the actuating voltages. Therefore, the ultrasonic motor is widely used in precise manufacturing, robots, and telescope zoom lens [14][15][16].…”

“…The input impedance characteristic of the motor was measured using impedance analyzer (4294A, Agilent Inc) at 0.5 Vrms. To compare the difference between the previous LUSM by author [7] and the proposed one, their impedance curve were plotted in Fig. 6(a) and (b) in which solid and dotted line illustrate the bending and longitudinal impedance versus exciting signal frequency.…”

“…But only a few of them operate in a non-longitudinal vibration mode. There are reports about multimode oscillations of a Langevin-type transducer (Shi, Chen, and Liu 2006;Shi, Chen, and Liu 2008;Asumi et al 2009;Chena and Shia 2007). A multimode transducer requires simultaneous excitation of two vibration modes such as, for example, the first longitudinal and second bending modes Liu 2006, 2008).…”
