The paper deals with the effect of date stone flour (DSF) as a filler on the elastic properties of biocomposites based on two different matrices, namely, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and green epoxy resin (GER). Potassium permanganate treatment was applied to improve the surface properties of the DSF filler. Fourier transform infrared spectrotroscopy was used to analyze the chemical changes of the functional groups in the untreated DSF and the permanganate treated DSF filler. Different filler content of 10, 20, and 30 wt%, respectively, were used to obtain PMMA/DSF and GER/DSF biocomposites. The elastic properties, namely, longitudinal modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus, Young’s modulus of elasticity, Poisson ratio, ultrasonic micro-hardness, and acoustic impedance of the biocomposites were determined using the ultrasonic through-transmission method. In addition, the morphology was studied using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectrotroscopy analysis results revealed the success of the permanganate treatment. The elastic properties of PMMA/DSF biocomposites were decreased, while an improvement of these properties is observed for GER/DSF biocomposites. Morphological results showed the presence of pores and cracks in the PMMA/DSF biocomposites, which is attributed to poor interfacial adhesion between the DSF filler and the PMMA matrix. However, fewer defects were observed in the GER/DSF biocomposites, which is due to better interfacial adhesion between the DSF filler and the GER matrix.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of the plasma treatment on the behavior of composite structures reinforced with marble powder, obtained as processing waste in the “Custonaci” basin. Moreover, different filler amounts (i.e., 10%wt, 20%, 30% in weight) were investigated. For the mechanical characterization, tensile and flexural quasi‐static tests, Charpy impact test, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) were performed. For the thermal stability, thermogravimetric analysis was carried out. Finally, real density and fraction of voids were measured. It was observed that untreated marble powder, on one hand, increases tensile and flexural stiffness and improves thermal stability, on the other hand, introduces a defectivity that produces a decrease of some properties (i.e., ultimate tensile and flexural strength). The plasma treatment induces improvements in all the mechanical properties (i.e., quasi‐static and dynamic). Vice versa, the thermal behavior is not affected by the treatment. POLYM. This study presents the ultrasonic characterization of conductive epoxy resin (ER)/polyaniline (PANI) composites. The prepared PANI is mixed with ER matrix at weight percentages of 5%, 10%, and 15% for preparing the ER/PANI composites. The effects of PANI amount on the mechanical properties of ER/PANI composites are investigated by ultrasonic pulse‐echo‐overlap method. Also, electrical conductivity, ultrasonic wave velocity and ultrasonic micro‐hardness values of ER/PANI composites are correlated. Experimental results show that there is an excellent correlation between ultrasonic micro‐hardness and ultrasonic shear wave velocity. Also, the results of ultrasonic velocities and elastic constants values illustrate that the appropriate combination ratio is 95 : 5 for ER and PANI in ER/PANI composites. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
