Ultrasonication-Assisted Sorption of Cadmium from Aqueous Phase by Wheat Bran

Abstract: In the present study, the sorption of cadmium from aqueous phase by wheat bran was investigated with and without the assistance of ultrasound. Kinetic data and sorption equilibrium isotherms were carried out in batch conditions. The influence of different operating parameters such as ultrasonic power, cadmium initial concentration, sorbent mass, temperature, and the combination of ultrasound and mechanical stirring on the kinetics of cadmium removal was studied. The obtained results show that the ultrasonic ir… Show more

“…The mass transfer coefficient was estimated using Eqs. and : VdCdt=knormalsA(CCnormals) where C s is the COD of the pollutant at the surface (mg/L), C is the COD of the pollutant in the bulk fluid (mg/L), A is the surface area for the external mass transfer (m 2 ), k s is the liquid film mass transfer coefficient (m/min), t is the time (min), and V is the volume of the effluent taken for investigation (L). “…These actions enhanced pore diffusion and mass transfer across the boundary layer [22]. In addition, acoustic streaming caused due to ultrasound waves improved the mass transfer [23]. Further, the reduction in sorbent size was observed due to ultrasound irradiation [5] and this may be due to the breakage of solid particles.…”
