Ultrasound of the Hip Joint, Soft Tissues, and Nerves

Abstract: Ultrasound (US) of the hip is widely used both in children and adults for selected clinical indications. According to the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology, hip US is indicated for several clinical conditions involving the joint, soft tissues, and nerves. Hip US indications include fluid detection, synovitis, effusion, and synovial cysts; soft tissue evaluation such as tendinopathy and bursitis; and peripheral nerve pathology of large and small nerves around the hip. In addition, US is an effective… Show more

“…When imaged by ultrasound, the AIIS, iliopsoas notch, and iliopubic eminence are visualized as a hyperechoic rim (pelvic rim) deep to the hypoechoic iliacus muscle and the hyperechoic round-shaped psoas tendon. Superficially, the femoral artery, vein, and nerve are located on the medial side, and the sartorius muscle and lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) on the lateral side [9].…”

“…Hip ultrasound (US) is indicated for the evaluation of several clinical conditions involving the joint, soft tissues, and is an effective guidance for interventions (Klauser et al, 2012;Tagliafico et al, 2017). US imaging has been demonstrated to be a reliable and valid measurement of inferior Talbott, 2018, 2016) and posterior glenohumeral translation (Talbott and Witt, 2016) and posterior femoral glide (Loubert et al, 2013) during joint mobilizations.…”
