IntroductionThis cross‐sectional study used a convergent parallel mixed‐method design to investigate friendship attachment style, intolerance of uncertainty, and psychological distress among unaccompanied immigrant minors (UIMs) during the second wave of the COVID‐19 pandemic in Italy.MethodParticipants were 80 male UIMs (Mage = 17 years, standard deviation = 0.84) hosted in residential care communities. Individual interviews comprising questionnaires and open‐ended questions assessed the constructs of interest. Qualitative data were analyzed through thematic content analysis, whereas descriptive statistics and regression analysis were computed on quantitative data.ResultsSeveral UIMs mentioned positive relationships with peers, but more than half also felt reluctant to trust others and build new friendships due to events experienced before and during migration. However, in quantitative data, 69% identified themselves with the secure friendship attachment style. Regarding intolerance of uncertainty, participants expressed feelings of worry about the pandemic, but also emphasized their resources in terms of confidence, optimism, and planning skills, as well as being accustomed to uncertainty; indeed, levels of this variable were low‐to‐medium. In regression analysis, insecure attachment and higher intolerance of uncertainty were each associated with greater psychological distress. Moreover, psychological distress was lower among securely attached UIMs with low (vs. high) levels of intolerance of uncertainty.ConclusionThe findings suggest that, even in conditions of societal insecurity, UIMs display resilience and employ effective coping strategies; however, a lack of trust in peer relationships and the inability to tolerate uncertainty may undermine their psychological adjustment. Implications for developmental theory and practice are discussed.

The Effect of a Telehealth Intervention on Mother–Child’s Feeding Interactions During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Purpose This study evaluated the outcomes of a telehealth intervention aimed at enhancing exchanges in mother–child dyads who showed an impoverishment of the quality of their feeding interactions and a worsening of their psychopathological symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods N=334 mothers and their three-year-old children were recruited to assess their feeding interactions through an observational tool administered via a web platform, and maternal and offspring psychopathological symptoms were measured through the SCL/90-R and the CBCL 1.5–5. This study constitutes the third wave (T3) of a longitudinal research. Results Our results showed that the intervention significantly improved the quality of mother–child feeding interactions. Moreover, mothers’ psychopathological symptoms reduced after the intervention, especially in the interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive-compulsive subscales; offspring emotional/behavioral functioning and dysregulation symptoms also decreased, particularly in the subscales of withdrawn anxious/depressed attention problems and aggressive behavior. Conclusion This study adds knowledge to the literature on COVID-19 pandemic effects on psychological health of parents and young children, proposing a method of intervention that had been effectively adopted previously but whose effectiveness had not been investigated during the pandemic.

Este estudio analiza la influencia de las redes sociales digitales en los imaginarios sobre España creados por los menores marroquíes que migran al país. Usamos una metodología cualitativa basada en catorce entrevistas a jóvenes que migraron a España desde Marruecos siendo menores de edad. Los resultados muestran que las redes sociales de otros jóvenes que migraron anteriormente son la principal fuente de información con la que se construye la imagen de España. Esta imagen resulta sesgada, ya que no se corresponde con la experiencia real que experimentan al llegar al país, y provoca que la juventud se sienta desengañada por la información recibida previamente. Sin embargo, al llegar a España los menores replican en las redes el mismo tipo de contenidos. Concluimos que el sesgo narcisista de las redes sociales unido a la presión social para mostrar de forma exitosa el proceso migratorio se apuntan como causas de este fenómeno, que retroalimenta el impulso por migrar de otros menores marroquíes. No obstante, la falta de expectativas de futuro para la juventud en Marruecos sigue siendo la motivación principal para migrar.
