Considering the importance of visual representations for communication between stakeholders in landscape planning and design processes, the authors identify a lack of critical visual research methods supportive of the disciplines involved. As part of such a method, they have developed an analytical framework based on semiotic and iconographic theory that enables a visual content analysis and iconographic interpretation of landscape design representations. Two projects from Rebuild by Design, a participatory transdisciplinary design competition organized in the New York City area after hurricane Sandy, were analysed to demonstrate this framework. The article presents a semiotic vocabulary based on four categories: medium, mode, formulation and knowledge with which to ‘read’, discuss and potentially create design representations. This enables a syntactic analysis for assessing the semiotic complexity of design representations in terms of validity, readability and interactivity. This assessment enables further qualitative study of the production and interpretation of landscape design representations in practice.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the topic of sustainability as a key basis for the formation of utopia on the example of the work of utopians (architects, politicians, etc.) in the historical context, and to compare their approaches to environmentalism with those prevalent and implemented today. The authors identify three conditional periods of utopia formation from the point of view of urban planning, which clearly demonstrate the shift in the approach to solving relevant problems, namely: spreading the idea of an ideal city (on the example of Franciscus Patricius, Ludovico Zuccolo); rejection of the city as a desirable model of human settlement and an attempt to return to nature (works by William Dean Howells, William Morris, Anatole France); a period of active implementation of environmental technologies in projects since the early 20th century (the work by Ernest Callenbach).

Este artículo, primera parte de una serie, repasa la idea de ‘centro’ de la ciudad mediante un análisis de algunas propuestas utópicas, incluidas las de Howard para la ciudad jardín y finaliza en el análisis de la policentralidad de la ciudad medieval. Tras un repaso de la evolcución de las ciudades circulares y poligonales realizado a partir de un análisis de fuentes secundarias, iconografía artísica, cartografía de los primeros tiempos de la imprenta e imágenes de Google Earth, entra en la discusión acerca de la ‘ciudad ideal’estudiando dicho concepto en la escolástica medieval, especialmente en la obra de Eiximenis, así como la relación de este ideal con la materialización de las ciudades [1] medievales de repoblamiento, valorando la relación entre los trazados y la emergencia del centro urbano y [2] el estudio, con distintas intensidades, de ciudades medievales importantes: Siena, Bolonia, Florencia, Venecia, Bruselas, Cracovia, Nápoles y Barcelona. En el caso de estas dos últimas ciudades el artículo focaliza en la importancia del espacio portuario y de ribera, como gran espacio público de la ciudad.
