Uncertain failure thresholds in cumulative damage models

Abstract: This paper investigates the issues related to variability in degradation-based reliability models and how the variability affects the remaining useful life prognosis being made by those models. Particularly, uncertain failure thresholds in cumulative damage models are of primary interest in this study. Many degradation-based reliability approaches make use of a predefined deterministic value of the failure threshold. However, in real-world cases, the designer may not be aware of the precise critical degradatio… Show more

“…It is known to us that both the two models assume that the composite material will fail when its damage accumulation equals 1. However, in many fatigue experiments (Usynin et al, 2008;Wang and Coit, 2007), the damage accumulation deviates from unity when the failure occurs. To achieve proper damage accumulation prediction, a more effective strategy is highly demanded by industry.…”

“…A source of both difficulty and uncertainty is the definition of this failure threshold because systems rarely have a hard failure threshold which holds for each unit. Often there is an associated failure distribution which must be taken into account when estimating RUL and its uncertainty (Usynin et al, 2008).…”

“…The correlation between stress and strength degradation was considered. Alexander Usynin, Wesley Hineshe and Aleksey Urmanov are used to study the uncertainty failure threshold problem in the cumulative damage model [49] . Zhang Deng [50] studies the statistical inference problem for a class of discrete degenerate data under random failure threshold.…”
