Uncommon Occupational Lung Diseases: High-Resolution CT Findings

Abstract: HRCT plays an increasing role in the evaluation of occupational lung diseases. We present several cases of unusual occupational lung diseases and their HRCT findings. The diseases studied were siderosis, talcosis, berylliosis, calcicosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis (due to wheat flour and isocyanates), and Ardystil syndrome. The characteristic HRCT findings together with clinical features and related occupational history improve the diagnostic accuracy of these diseases.

“…Less than half of the examined workers (38 out of 113) had opacities or shadows in their chest X-rays, and further examination of 14 workers with an average exposure duration of 10 years revealed no lung function changes to suggest lung fibrosis. A more recent review of occupational lung diseases corroborates their conclusion stating that siderosis, or iron oxide accumulation in lung macrophages, does not lead to fibrosis or impairment in lung function and adds that the X-ray abnormalities observed are reversible [33].…”

“…Zespół Ardystilu cechuje tendencja do wystąpienia postępującego śródmiąższowego włóknienia mimo prowadzonego leczenia glikokortykosteroidami. Choroba jest ograniczona głównie do układu oddechowego, a rokowanie pogarsza pojawienie się niewydolności oddechowej [5,7,15].…”
