Under Pressure: The Effect of Antioxidants on Health Consequences Related to Oxidative Stress

Abstract: We examine the relationships between oxidative stress (i.e., manifestations of physiological stress), antioxidants, potentially negative health outcomes (i.e., triglyceride levels), and self-employment through two studies. Our results indicate that oxidative stress is associated with higher triglyceride levels and, as hypothesized, this relationship is mitigated in the presence of higher levels of antioxidants. Perhaps most interestingly, in both studies, we find that oxidative stress has a stronger positive r… Show more

“…Considering such justification processes, research on biomarkers of wellbeing might offer important complementary insights. Studies mapped physiological biomarkers related to negative wellbeing and stress processes, such as allostatic load (Patel et al, 2019), telomere length (Lee et al, 2020), blood pressure (Cardon & Patel, 2015; Stephan & Roesler, 2010), cortisol (Schermuly et al, 2021), oxidative stress and triglyceride levels (Patel & Wolfe, 2021). Yet, research on biomarkers of positive wellbeing, such as serotonin and oxytocin (Huppert, 2009), is missing in entrepreneurship research and in management research generally (Nicolaou et al, 2021; Nofal et al, 2017), presenting a valuable opportunity for future contributions.…”

“…It has the highest intermediation with the keyword "health" (73), which is the number of times a node is found on the shortest path between other nodes. The keyword "health" acts as a bridge node between nodes in the network, having external links that connect them with other themes that aggregate production and impact in publications, such as "stress" in the red cluster (MacDonald et al, 2005;Tschirhart et al, 2019;Stier-Jarmer et al, 2020;Patel and Wolfe, 2021) and "covid-19" (Molino et al, 2020;Zandi et al, 2020) in the purple cluster, establishing links between these terms.…”

“…job demand and job control) between entrepreneurs and salaried employees (Rietveld et al , 2015; Stephan and Roesler, 2010; Wolfe and Patel, 2022). Several studies innovatively introduced biological markers to proxy stress, suggesting that stress is detrimental to entrepreneurs’ physical health (Cardon and Patel, 2015; Patel et al , 2019; Patel and Wolfe, 2021). However, little is known about the role of firm-level factors in explaining health.…”
