“…Several reports from this Institute and elsewhere have shown a difference in the kinetics of drugs in the undernourished subjects as compared to the wellnourished (Shastri & Krishnaswamy 1976;Mehta et al, 1975;Shastri & Krishnaswamy 1979;Krishnaswamy & Naidu 1977). Data presented here are different.…”

“…In recent years there have been a number of reports on the influence of malnutrition on drug metabolism in man (Shastri & Krishnaswamy, 1976;Krishnaswamy & Naidu, 1977;Mehta, Kalsi, Jayaraman & Mathur, 1975; Shastri & Krishnaswamy, 1979;Homeida, Karrar & Roberts 1979). These studies have emphasised the importance of considering nutritional status in the planning of therapeutic regimen.…”

“…This finding, however, cannot be explained as being due to an increased renal elimination of the drug as was the case with tetracycline (Shastri & Krishnaswamy, 1976).…”

“…This aspect is of obvious relevance to large segments of the population in developing countries among whom malnutrition is widespread. Earlier reports from this Institute have indicated that in under-nourished subjects the kinetics of tetracycline (Shastri & Krishnaswamy, 1976) and antipyrine (Krishnaswamy & Naidu, 1977) are altered. Several studies in experimental animals have shown that deficiencies of specific nutrients can alter the activities of drug metabolizing enzymes (Wade, Wu, Holbrook & Caster, 1973;Catz, Juchau & Yaffe, 1970;Axelrod, Udenfriend & Brodie, 1954).…”

“…In fact, a figure of 0.35 1/kg for the Vd of SSZ (Table 1) supports the possibility that the distribution of this drug may not be confined to extracellular fluid alone. If, indeed, there is some amount of tissue binding for this drug it is possible that in malnutrition it may be reduced, as was earlier suggested for tetracycline (Shastri & Krishnaswamy, 1976), and this could be one of the reasons why the actual Vd has not showed the expected increase in the undernourished subjects. Further, the model used by Tse (1980) Vd based on unbound fraction of the drug in plasma.…”
