Understanding chronic non-communicable diseases in Latin America: towards an equity-based research agenda

Abstract: Although chronic non-communicable diseases are traditionally depicted as diseases of affluence, growing evidence suggests they strike along the fault lines of social inequality. The challenge of understanding how these conditions shape patterns of population health in Latin America requires an inter-disciplinary lens. “…[10][11][12] In Brazil as well as in other developing countries, the phenomenon of population aging, associated with reduced morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases, has boosted the potential burden of chronic diseases, 13 with major implications for HRQoL. 14 Many instruments have been developed to measure HRQoL, 4 among which the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) system. This generic measure of health status developed by the EuroQol Group is easily administered and interpreted, and can be used to evaluate both general and disease-specific populations.…”

Contrary to the widely held belief that NCDs are diseases of affluence, the World Health Statistics (2010) most recent data suggests that these diseases cause profound premature mortality and avoidable morbidity in low-and middle-income countries.…”
