Understanding the change of land space utilization efficiency with different functions and its coupling coordination: A case study of Urban Agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River, China

Abstract: Land spaces function in capacities of urban development, agricultural production, and ecological conservation, among many others. Research of land space utilization efficiency (LSUE) and coupling coordination relationships among its subsystems are significant for sustainable land space development. In this study, taking the Urban Agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River (UAMRYR) as the study area, we establish a measurement index system to evaluate the LSUE (2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(… Show more

“…Second, control variable index system, social economy, and environment were considered according to the relevant literature and the principles of representativeness, accuracy, and conciseness (Huang et al, 2016). Among them, the socioeconomic dimension indicators include the per capita GDP, representing the impact of local economic development on agricultural development, the number of ordinary middle school graduates, representing the education of the agricultural labor force, and the income ratio of rural residents to urban residents, representing the characteristics of rural–urban income gap (Ma et al, 2018; Yang, Yang, et al, 2023). The natural environment dimension indicators cover the annual average precipitation and annual average temperature, representing the key climatic characteristics restricting agricultural production, and the land use diversity, representing the regional land use structure characteristics (Chen & Gong, 2021; Guo et al, 2020) (please see Supporting Information for data descriptive).…”

“…For example, P1B1 denotes the coupling coordination between the input of deserticulture development and economic benefits of land use in subsystem interaction coupling, and P1P2 represents the coupling coordination between the input and output of deserticulture development within the system's subsystems interaction couplings. The coupling coordination relationship between deserticulture development and land use benefits across subsystems was analyzed (Figure 5) [35].…”

“…However, existing research still faces the following issues: (1) Scholars mostly discuss urban resilience or urban land use efficiency from an independent perspective [ 2 , 4 , [7] , [8] , [9] , [10] , [11] , [12] ], without studying the interactive relationship between the two. However, the sustainable and high-quality development of cities is a complex system that should not be confined to just one aspect [ 13 ]. Overemphasis on efficient land use may have a negative impact on urban security, while excessive focus on urban security may reduce the efficiency of land resource utilization.…”
