Understanding the Pivotal Role of the Vagus Nerve in Health from Pandemics

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic seems endless with the regular emergence of new variants. Is the SARS-CoV-2 virus particularly evasive to the immune system, or is it merely disrupting communication between the body and the brain, thus pre-empting homeostasis? Retrospective analysis of the COVID-19 and AIDS pandemics, as well as prion disease, emphasizes the pivotal but little-known role of the 10th cranial nerve in health. Considering neuroimmunometabolism from the point of view of the vagus nerve, non-invasive bioengin… Show more

“…As results, a significant drop in HF power related to SARS-CoV-2 infection was consis-tently observed [49,55,59,61]. This may be understood in the context of vagal invasion by SARS-CoV-2 and the important role of the nerve system in neuroimmunometabolism [67]. A potential association with the significant reduction in HF power observed in patients with long COVID can also be assumed [68], as the development of postural orthostatic syndrome after COVID-19 involves mechanisms such as increased sympathetic activity and decreased parasympathetic activity due to SARS-CoV-2 infection [69].…”

“…This pathway can also be activated via non-invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation (nVNS) [ 15 ], which could turn out to be a true game changer not only in etiologic rehabilitation [ 16 ] but also in symptomatic rehabilitation, notably acting on motor rehabilitation [ 17 ] and pain [ 18 ].…”

“…Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been found to promote motor activity by increasing neuroplasticity and facilitating cortical reorganization and neurogenesis [31,32]. Therefore, it seems reasonable to expand the knowledge of cranial nerve stimulation in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, including stimulation of the trigeminal nerve as well as in the future of other nerves, including the vagus nerve, which can improve not only articulatory performance but also hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia, breathing difficulties, and psychological issues in later life [33,34].…”
