“…Multiple large-scale surveys have been conducted to collect descriptive data about the disability population (e.g., the National Health and Aging Trends Study; Montaquila, Freedman, Spillman, & Kasper, 2012 ; the National Long-Term Care Survey; Manton, 2004 ; and the American Community Survey; U.S. Census Bureau, 2014a ). However, given the varying operationalization of the definition of disability in these surveys it is difficult to assess the underlying functional limitations ( Harrington et al, 2015 ). It is also impossible to disentangle activity and participation difficulties caused by a pre-existing impairment versus those caused by age-related changes.…”

“…While there are many interventions to address the support needs of individuals who are experiencing normal aging, the needs of people who are aging with impairments have generally been neglected (e.g., Beer, Mitzner, Stuck, & Rogers, 2015 ; Campbell & Putnam, 2017 ; Harrington et al, 2015 ). These needs include supports for managing chronic diseases and engaging in physical exercise to optimize health ( Beer, Mitzner, Stuck, & Rogers, 2015 ; Mitzner, McBride, Barg-Walkow, & Rogers, 2013 ); performing daily activities (e.g., Beer, Mitzner, Stuck, & Rogers, 2015 ; Luo, Hawkley, & Waite, Cacioppo, 2012 ; U.S. Administration on Aging, 2016 ); and participating in community activities (e.g., Yang & Sanford, 2012 ).…”

“…AT can enhance people's independence and compensate for age-related health conditions and losses (Schulz et al, 2015). Harrington et al (2015) review of the use of AT among older adults reported that 14%-18% of older adults in private homes used any kind of AT, while this use increased with age (Harrington et al, 2015). Although robotics is another relevant type of AT, in our article, we focus on AT that have already been implemented in older adults' everyday settings (Peine & Neven, 2019) including hearing aids, wheelchairs, and emergency call systems.…”

“…Slik vil utfordringene knyttet til implementering av slike teknologier i dag kunne reduseres. Samtidig vet vi fra tidligere studier (Harrington, Mitzner, & Rogers, 2015;Hattink et al, 2016) at eldre jevnt over er motiverte og ganske positive til å ta i bruk ny teknologi. Andre viktige hindringer for teknologiske innovasjon i kommunehelsetjenesten har vaert at teknologien har vaert for lite brukervennlig, det har vaert tekniske feil.…”
