Undertreatment of hypertension in a population-based study in The Netherlands

Abstract: A considerable proportion of hypertensives were undertreated for hypertension. To decrease the undertreatment of hypertension, it is necessary to obtain better control of blood pressure in patients already being treated, increase the detection of hypertension and improve adherence to the current guidelines.

“…4 From elderly nonstroke populations, the proportion of nontreatment has been reported to be 18% in the Netherlands 19 and 41% in men and 22% in women in Sweden. 20 Within the blood pressure control groups in the present study, those with controlled blood pressure had a similar proportion of people not treated (10%) as the uncontrolled group (16%). It is important to note that nontreatment does not imply an absence of management of hypertension altogether.…”

“…Therefore, the uncontrolled blood pressure seen in the present study may be a result of other factors, such as treatment resistance, recent commencement of medications, or lack of physician follow-up. 20 It is evident that most of these factors can be readily addressed.…”

“…Furthermore, international differences in dosing and varying undertreatment of hypertension may also be an Utilization of antihypertensive agents P Stolk et al explanation. 25 Differences in population age and gender composition of the respective countries were relatively small. 8 For both absolute and relative differences, the various approaches to cope with the challenges of the pharmaceutical marketplace when it comes to price setting, reimbursement restrictions and insurance schemes surely also play a role.…”

“…Previously, it was reported that the prevalence of hypertension (systolic blood pressure (SBP) X140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) X90 mmHg and/or use of antihypertensive medication) in the Netherlands in the period 1993-1997 was approximately 20.2% of the population in the age-group from 40 to 59 years. 10 Studies from other countries suggest that the proportion of hypertensives treated and/or controlled has been stable in recent years or has even decreased. 11,12 Therefore, we performed the present study to assess the prevalence and determinants of undertreatment of hypertension in the Netherlands during 1996-2002.…”
