Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma) of the Head in a Dog

Abstract: ABSTRACT. A six year-old intact female miniature poodle was presented with a soft mass of the forehead region. Computed tomography identified generalized frontal bone loss and a large extracranial mass, which had a low attenuation area of hemorrhagic necrosis with septation and enhancement of solid components. In magnetic resonance imaging, the mass was isointense in T1-weighted images except its fluid parts and hyperintense in T2-weighted images with lobulated by low-signal septa. Surgery was performed to rem… Show more

“…Metastasis has been reported in cases of UPS in other species, particularly to the lymph nodes and lungs. 7,9 Further screening for metastasis such as computed tomography (CT) scans of the chest and abdomen would be ideal in this case to screen for the presence of metastasis, particularly pulmonary metastasis; however, this would require general anaesthesia, which as discussed before is high risk in this species. In addition, a suitable size CT scanner would be required to facilitate this, which we currently do not have access to.…”

“…UPSs have been reported in other species, including humans, dogs, cats, cattle, horses, koi carp and California sea lions 7–12 . UPSs are one of the most commonly reported soft tissue sarcomas in human patients between 50 and 70‐years old.…”

“…Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas (UPSs), previously known as "malignant fibrous histiocytomas" (MFHs) are a group of soft tissue sarcomas reported in several species including humans, dogs, and cats [1][2][3][4]. Although no breed predisposition is known, flat coated retrievers, rottweilers, and golden retrievers with UPSs are frequently reported previously [2].…”

“…In veterinary medicine, UPS have been reported in dogs, cats, cattle, pigs and horses, in a wide variety of locations, and with no clear age predisposition across the species (Brown et al, 2007; Carmalt & Linn, 2013; Choi et al, 2011; De Zani et al, 2011; Ghibaudo et al, 2008; Gleiser et al, 1979; Hendrick et al, 1992; Huyghe et al, 2014; Kim et al, 2018; Morris et al, 2002; Renlund & Pritzker, 1984; Sanders et al, 1996; Sartin et al, 1996; Seiler & Wilkinson, 1980; Tanimoto et al, 1988; Van Biervliet et al, 2004; Waters et al, 1994). A review of the veterinary literature can be challenging, because many older reports use the old nomenclature of malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and the subsequent reclassification of these means that the veterinary cases should ideally also be reclassified to more accurately inform the reader as to the exact tumour type.…”
