“…Previous research on sense of belonging and low-income students informed this study. Higher education researchers and practitioners have extensively used sense of belonging as a theoretical orientation for understanding different student experiences (Hurtado & Carter, 1997; McClure & Ryder, 2018; Means & Pyne, 2017; Museus & Maramba, 2011; Rosati et al, 2019; Samura, 2016; Soria & Stebleton, 2013; Strayhorn, 2012; Vaccaro & Newman, 2016; Yao, 2016). Within this study, we organize around Strayhorn’s (2012) conceptualization of sense of belonging, which centers a student’s “perceived social support on campus, a feeling or sensation of connectedness, the experience of mattering or feeling cared about, accepted, respected, valued by, and important to the group (e.g., campus community) or others on campus (e.g., faculty, peers)” (p. 3).…”
