Unilateral Beau's lines associated with a fractured olecranon

Abstract: We report a case of unilateral Beau's lines developing after an olecranon fracture of the right elbow. Unilateral Beau's lines are an uncommon phenomenon but have been previously reported after trauma to the wrist, hands, forearm and elbow.

“…Including our case, a total of 16 cases of Beau's lines/ onychomadesis associated with cast immobilization following trauma have been reported since 1995 (Table 1) [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Notably, nine out of the 16 cases were described in a paper by Tosti et al [6].…”

“…Correspondence Clinical Letter result of improper cast application is an important factor for underlying nail changes as it may cause physiological changes such as hypoxic damage, decreased nutritional supply, and altered metabolism in the nail matrix [2,7]. Observation is generally recommended for this condition as the transient arrest of cell growth in the nail matrix usually resolves after cast removal without any further treatment.…”

“…Nail findings likely arise due to the direct cast‐induced trauma and underlying neurovascular alterations. Unilateral Beau's lines can occur following trauma due to impaired blood flow to the nail matrix transiently impeding nail plate growth 28 . Extremity immobilization can similarly interfere with nail growth, suggesting a potential etiology for reported cases of Beau's lines after cast immobilization 28,29 .…”
