“…(It should be noted that the effects of cohabitation depend on the specific dependent variables assessed: Härkönen used a hazard model to calculate the risk of early dissolution for premarital cohabitors per year , whereas we analyzed overall rates of dissolution in this sample). In addition, one Canadian study (White, 1987) and the Greek study (Symeonidou & Mitsopoulpos, 2003) evidenced high rates of stability in cohabitors' subsequent marriages compared to noncohabitors' marriages.…”

“…This particular situation is very much related to other social problems. For example, according to recent research findings (Symeonidou and Mitsopoulos 2003), in Greece the decision to divorce is not related to women's working hours as in other countries, since women are quite often in unpaid or low-paid, low-status jobs and the decision to divorce becomes very Haris Symeonidou difficult without the necessary means to support oneself. Although it would appear that Greek women's participation in the labour force has increased considerably, especially among women with young children, women still have a long way to go before they gain their economic independence.…”

“…Overall, these arguments imply that cohabitation prior to marriage will reduce the risk of separation. In some European countries, such as Norway and Greece, research indicates that cohabitation before marriage reduces the risk of separation (Liefbroer & Dourleijn, 2006; Symeonindou & Mitsopoulpous, 2003), but overall there is little empirical support for the expectation that premarital cohabitation reduces the risk of separation. In Australia (Bracher et al, 1993; de Vaus et al, 2005) and other comparable Western countries such as the United States (Bumpass, Martin, & Sweet, 1991; DeMaris & Rao, 1992; Dush et al, 2003; Teachman & Polonko, 1990), Canada (Hall & Zhao, 1995), and Britain (Berrington & Diamond, 1999), research has consistently found that people who cohabit prior to marriage have an increased likelihood of separation compared to those who do not cohabit.…”
