Universal cements: dual activated and chemically activated

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to assess the bond strength of universal cements cured either dually or chemically only. Methods: Three cements were assessed using different types of application: dual activated (DA) or chemically activated (CA). In total 80 dentin blocks were used, obtained through the enamel wear of the lingual and buccal surfaces of bovine incisors. Standard cone-shaped cavity preparations were created using diamond burs. Subsequently, indirect restoration blocks were designed wi… Show more

“…Resin cements can be light activated or chemical activated or dual activated (combinations of light and chemical) (Ferracane, 2011, Blatz et al, 2003), because of the lack of control over the working time in chemically cured resin cements, clinicians prefer either light activated or dual activated resins (Hofmann et al, 2001, de Lima et al, 2016, Lee et al, 2008, Cho et al, 2015). Dual-cured resin cements provides the advantages of both light and chemically activated resins, reach adequate degree of polymerization and provide an extended working time due to the easily controlled light-curing mechanism.…”

“…According to our findings, this cement revealed a significantly higher marginal and internal adaptation than Variolink Esthetic DC cement. An explanation of the good seal of RelyX Ultimate could be that Single-Bond Universal adhesive contains Vitrebond copolymer that promotes adhesion to tooth surface through an interaction between free carboxylic groups and calcium [ 25 ]. In addition, according to the manufacturer, the adhesive has a rehydration effect on collapsed collagen fibers after phosphoric acid etching that can enhance the formation of a hybrid layer.…”

“…When using the SB adhesive, chemical bonding is achieved between the acidic methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) and enamel, which permits the formation of stable and durable interfaces, good mechanical properties, and an improved rate of conversion of its hydrophobic resin. 40,41 Therefore, the presence of MDP in the SBadhesive may underlie the higher associated bond strength. 42 The chemical composition of TNB is based on a combination of hydrophilic hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), hydrophobic decanediol dimethacrylate (D3MA), intermediate bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate (bis-GMA)monomers, MDP, and methacrylated carboxylic acid polymer (MCAP).…”
