Abstract. We investigate dynamics of charged particles in current sheets with the sheared magnetic field. In our previous paper (Artemyev et al., 2013) we studied the particle motion in such magnetic field configurations on the basis of the quasi-adiabatic theory and conservation of the quasiadiabatic invariant. In this paper we concentrate on violation of the adiabaticity due to jumps of this invariant and the corresponding effects of stochastization of a particle motion. We compare effects of geometrical and dynamical jumps, which occur due to the presence of the separatrix in the phase plane of charged particle motion. We show that due to the presence of the magnetic field shear, the average value of dynamical jumps is not equal to zero. This effect results in the decrease of the time interval necessary for stochastization of trapped particle motion. We investigate also the effect of the magnetic field shear on transient trajectories, which cross the current sheet boundaries. Presence of the magnetic field shear leads to the asymmetry of reflection and transition of particles in the current sheet. We discuss the possible influence of single-particle effects revealed in this paper on the current sheet structure and dynamics.

Energetic particles with energies from tens of keV to a few hundred keV are frequently observed in the Earth's magnetotail. Here we study, by means of a test particle numerical simulation, the acceleration of different ion species (H+, He+, He++, and On+ with n = 1–6) in the presence of transient electromagnetic perturbations. All the considered ions develop power law tails at high energies, except for O+ ions. This is strongly correlated to the time that the particle spends in the current sheet. Ion acceleration is found to be proportional to the charge state, while it grows in a weaker way with the ion mass. We find that O5+/6+ can reach energies higher than 500 keV. These results may explain the strong oxygen acceleration observed in the magnetotail.

[1] In the Earth plasma sheet boundary layer, two types of ion beams (so-called beamlets of type I and of type II) were investigated for more then two decades. Type I beamlets have energies < 20 keV and small velocity dispersion, while type II beamlets have energies up to 100 keV and large velocity dispersion. It is believed that beamlets of type I result from nonadiabatic and resonant acceleration by the cross-tail electric field E y at the fulfillment of the resonant condition in the current sheet, while beamlets type II could be generated by sufficiently large level of electromagnetic fluctuations in the magnetotail. The resonant condition is very sensitive to the presence of the perturbation and eventually should be destroyed by growing "noise." We performed test particle simulation taking into account two possible acceleration mechanisms, cross-tail electric field E y and stochastic acceleration due to electromagnetic perturbations. Electromagnetic perturbation were generated by a set of oscillating clouds in the plasma sheet. We obtained that type I beamlets could be observed even in the presence of moderate levels of perturbation ıB B z (z = 0), where B z is a magnetic field component perpendicular to the current sheet plane. Increasing the perturbation level, beamlets of higher energy are obtained. The interplay of ion resonant acceleration and magnetic perturbation in the magnetotail leads to a continuous transition from beamlets of type I to beamlets of type II. A comparison of the numerical results with the observation of ion populations in magnetotail is also discussed.
