Universal Time Variations in the Magnetosphere and the Effect of CME Arrival Time: Analysis of the February 2022 Event that Led to the Loss of Starlink Satellites

Abstract: We present an analysis of the magnetospheric response to the two Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) impacts which led to the destruction of 38 out of 49 Starlink satellites in early February 2022. We employ the Expanding-Contracting Polar Cap model to analyse the variation in the size of the ionospheric polar caps and thereby quantify the Universal Time (UT) effect of the diurnal motions of the geomagnetic poles in a geocentric frame of reference.
