Unnecessary handover minimization in two-tier heterogeneous networks

Abstract: Abstract-Ultra-dense deployment of small cells (SC) can be foreseen in 5G network under the coverage area of the macrocell (MC). A mobile user equipment (UE) should be able to discover adjacent SCs to perform the handover (HO). This process can be done by frequent neighbour cell scanning. However, extensive scanning for every SC in a dense deployment scenario is a resource wasting strategy, which results in a power dissipation of the UE battery and also lowers the throughput gain. This also means that a high n… Show more

“…When addressing the HO in 5G, existing works are usually divided in targeting the reduction of HOFs [3], [31], [62], reduction of HO rate [1], [63], [64], [65], or a combination of both [66]- [70], improving throughput or QoE of the user [1], [31], [71]- [77] and reduction of HO signaling [78], [79]. Other works are devoted to assess the energy saving [62], [80] and load balancing [62], [64].…”

“…The works in [1], [63]- [65] are dedicated to reducing the HOR. HO skipping is a technique that skips some HOs along a high-speed user trajectory to reduce the number of HOs and improve user throughput at high speeds.…”

“…In this regard, several attempts have been made to reduce HOF and unnecessary handovers. A user/cell centric handover optimisation is adopted in [6]- [9]. The idea is that by knowing user mobility state and cell type, handover to small cell can be adaptive to avoid HOFs and ping-pongs.…”

“…There have been a number of researches targeting the handover (HO) problem in the literature. We proposed a method to reduce the number of target SCs and reduce the unnecessary HOs in HetNet in [4]. The neighbour cell list (NCL) of the SCs is formed by utilizing the distance between the UE and the SC in addition to the angle of movement of the UE.…”
