“…The results clearly demonstrate the negative effects of SO2 on stomatal control mechanisms, since abnormahties in stomatal openings could be observed even three months after fumigation. These effects, which often have been postulated (SCHONBORN and WEBER 1981;MITSGHERLICH 1983) and recently registered by KROL et al (1982), pinpoint the interaction between SO2 stress and drought resistance. Synergistic effects between SO2 and drought might be of significance in the development of decline symptoms in nature.…”
