Unusual cutaneous metastatic follicular thyroid carcinoma

Abstract: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common thyroid cancer (TCs) after papillary carcinoma, but it is ranked first in producing distant metastases among TCs. It accounts for 10 – 20% of all thyroid malignancies and is most often seen in patients over 40 years of age. Distant metastases at the time of diagnosis are reported in 11 – 20% of the patients and may be the reason for presentation. There have been less than 30 reported cases of cutaneous metastases from FTC in the English Literature, a… Show more

“…There was an unusual case of Hurthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid with cutaneous metastases to the right chest wall. Cutaneous metastases of thyroid carcinoma are infrequent [12,13,14] and FNA is an important method for rapid diagnosis of such lesions [12].There have been fewer than 30 case reports of cutaneous metastases of thyroid carcinoma in the literature with majority to head and neck. [12] Cutaneous malignancies are less commonly in malignancies such as leukemia and lymphoma .3 cases of secondary NHL skin were seen in our study.…”

[18,19] One of these six cases presented with cutaneous metastatic lesion in left thigh from carcinoma breast. There are eight different clinicopathological types of skin involvement from breast cancer such as inflammatory breast carcinoma, telangiectatic metastatic breast carcinoma, nodular metastatic carcinoma, alopecia neoplastica, breast carcinoma of inframammary crease, metastatatic mammary carcinoma of eyelid, Paget's disease and carcinoma en cuirasse.…”

“…There were only 12 reported cases of skull metastases out of 473 patients of thyroid cancer in one study, accounting for 2.5% of cases ( 8 ). Likewise cutaneous metastases from DTC are uncommon with less than 30 reported cases of cutaneous metastases in the English literature until 2010 ( 9 ). These cutaneous metastases are more common in head and neck region and can manifest in a variety of histological appearances ( 10 – 12 ).…”
