Unusual history and initial clinical signs of Mycoplasma bovis mastitis and arthritis in first-lactation cows in a closed commercial dairy herd

Abstract: Mycoplasmal infections may cause unusual initial clinical signs or an atypical history. When dairy cattle, including those residing in closed herds, have lameness, swelling of the carpal or metacarpophalangeal joints, edema of the distal portions of the forelimbs, or polyarthritis, infection with Mycoplasma spp should be investigated. Delay in diagnosis of mycoplasmal infections in dairy herds can result in substantial financial loss and the establishment of chronic subclinical carriers.

“…Two subspecies have been isolated from congested lungs from two different lambs (ages 20 days & 1 year) after sudden death40. Mycoplasma species are linked to lameness, generally associated with polyarthritis in a wide range of animals, mainly pigs and poultry4142, but also cattle4344 and occasionally in sheep45.…”

“…34 -36 In outbreaks with Mycoplasma mastitis, it is not unusual to find cases of Mycoplasma arthritis. [37][38][39][40][41] Similarly, a field outbreak of Mycoplasma-associated bovine respiratory disease was associated with outbreaks of arthritis. 41 The link between arthritic Mycoplasma disease events and mastitis or pneumonia is indicative that internal somatic spread of this agent is not uncommon.…”
